Women make more brutal films,“ is what cult director Kira Muratova let the young filmmaker Isa Willinger know at the beginning of her film career. Isa Willinger has been asking herself how this is possible, „female“ usually being associated with „empathetic“ and „sensitive“. So she sets off on a journey to the great female directors of our time, to women who indeed often tell stories of a harsh reality, of brutal violence, of rough sex, of humiliation and revenge in their films. How do they relate to violence, harshness, to power, to gender relations, and ultimately to the female gaze?
